Guides like to sleep under the stars

                              

Girlguiding Malvern Division was delighted to receive a gold medal for our well dressing entry on the theme of ‘Planets and Stars’. The annual event, arranged by the Malvern Spa Association, sees the spouts and wells around the Malvern area decorated for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Mary Flynn’s vision of Guides in sleeping bags under the stars came together, with stars made by Rainbows and Brownies, Brownies in alien spaceships and rockets and recycled bottle planets made by Guides, as well as the Guides in their sleeping bags. Local Trefoil Guild members contributed floral decorations to complete the scene – a truly collaborative entry.

Several Guide and Brownie units followed a trail around Malvern to visit some of the well dressings in the centre of the town this weekend

Participating in the Midlands Moot

Upton Guides were not able to sleep under the stars this weekend, but they decided that they would hold a virtual sleepover as part of the Midlands Moot weekend. They built indoor dens, played charades, joined in a virtual campfire and made smores.

The photo above, sent by a mum is the den of two Guides sisters who slept in it as part of the Midlands Moot challenge. The Guides, and also the Brownies, made efforts to walk over the Bank Holiday weekend to add miles to the MOOT walking challenge. They also recorded the birds that they saw – everything from blue tits to a heron.

The Phyllis Whitfield Trophy in Malvern Division

             

Every year a section of Malvern Division competes for the Phyllis Whitfield Trophy. The trophy rotates between Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and adults, with the challenge being chosen by the leaders of the relevant section.

Miss Phyllis Whitfield was Malvern Division Commissioner for many years, but she held many other Girlguiding roles within Malvern. She sadly died in a car crash in 1963 at the age of 62 and the trophy is awarded in her memory.

This year the Rainbows were invited to create something on the theme “Why I like Rainbows”. The competition, independently judged, was won by Abigail Golding from Upton upon Severn Rainbows, with her “Rainbow Friends” picture. Well done, Abigail!

Abigail will keep the trophy, a silver bowl with an accompanying notebook of all the challenges undertaken over the years, until the Brownie take up the challenge next year.

Advertising Girlguiding in Upton upon Severn                                              

Girlguiding Upton now has a sign on the Upton upon Severn Scout and Guide HQ, advertising the presence of active Girlguiding units in Upton upon Severn, alongside Scouting.

 Mary Flynn, a Malvern Guider and member of the Upton HQ Committee, organised the design of the sign and consulted with Girlguiding HQ to check branding. She also arranged for the production and installation of the sign, which has been kindly donated by Betty Smith. Betty was Upton Brownie leader and assistant Guide leader for many years, and she continues to actively support Girlguiding in Upton. We are looking forward to many more years of Girlguiding in Upton!
